Center for Family Services’ Ab-YOU-se Campaign:  Because of YOU, healing is possible

West Palm Beach, Florida (November 2020)

Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County, Inc. (CFS) announces its end of year Ab-YOU-se Campaign to raise funds for their S.A.F.E. Kids program.  S.A.F.E. Kids stands for Stop Abuse by Family Empowerment, and it provides treatment for children and adults who are survivors of sexual abuse, physical abuse, or domestic violence.  S.A.F.E. Kids is the only program in Palm Beach County recognized by the Florida Department of Health as an official Sexual Abuse Treatment Provider (SATP).  In Palm Beach County, 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 6 boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of eighteen.  As a community, let us come together to address this issue and help break the patterns of abuse that often continue through generations.

James’ S.A.F.E. Kids Story
It was just a normal day for six year old, James*.  The sun was shining as he walked his family dog, but when he turned the corner to head home, he heard the distinct car vibrations from his mother’s boyfriend, Bud*.  The hair on James’ neck stood up and tears began to well in his eyes.

His mother kissed him goodbye on her way out for work and as the front door shut behind her, James’ nightmare began.  Bud had been drinking all day, as he did most days, and that meant only one thing.  Panicked, James took off running for his bedroom only to be grabbed en route.

Behind closed doors, the sexual and physical abuse James endured was indescribable.  James did not know how to tell his mother, so months went by this way.  One night, the abuse was so bad, James summoned the courage and confided in his mother.

Overwhelmed with feelings of guilt and confusion, his mother left Bud and sought help from the Center for Family Services’ S.A.F.E. Kids Program.  Their therapist helped them both to heal, James from fear and shame, and his mother from regret and anger.  The family now has the tools they need to cope and communicate with one another in order to end the cycle of abuse and live safe and fulfilled lives moving forward.

Children as young as three years old have received treatment services through the S.A.F.E. Kids program.  CFS therapists, trained in sexual abuse and trauma-informed therapy, help their clients recover and heal from traumatic experiences.  Treatment may include psycho-education, safety planning, creating the trauma narrative and play therapy.  When a client receives treatment and heals from this type of trauma, they are less likely to be abused again or become abusive in the future.
